Veldkamp: "A very different America" under Trump’s presidency

Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp stated that the world is now facing "a very different America" following Donald Trump’s return to the presidency. Veldkamp said that under Trump, the United States prioritizes its own interests and demands that its allies fend for themselves.

Speaking on the talk show WNL op Zondag, Veldkamp predicted that this shift would be lasting, even if a Democratic president were to return to office. “Welcome to the new world,” Veldkamp remarked. “It will never be as it was.” He specifically cautioned European countries to adjust to this new reality. “We can’t continue wallowing in our own righteousness,” he added.

Veldkamp noted that other countries are no longer receptive to Europe’s “raised finger” approach. "If we want to regain our authority, we must first better organize ourselves."

According to the Minister, the Trump administration is no longer making statements about “democracy or shared values,” as had been customary for decades. He cited the pressure on Ukraine to negotiate peace with Russia as an example of the "extraordinarily raw" approach the U.S. now takes in its dealings.

Veldkamp also pointed out that the U.S. is increasingly focused on securing rare earth materials found in Ukraine. A similar shift is reportedly seen in America’s stance on Venezuela, where the U.S. has abandoned its support for the democratic opposition in favor of negotiating with President Nicolás Maduro’s government for cheaper oil supplies.
