PSV beat Juventus to advance in the Champions League after decisive goal in extra time

PSV made it two Dutch teams in the last 16 of the Champions League on Wednesday when they defeated Juventus 3-1 after extra time. The Eindhovenaren had lost the first match 2-1 in Turin. The vital goal was scored by Ryan Flamingo in extra time after Ivan Perisic and Ismael Saibari had scored in the first 90 minutes.

Peter Bosz's side is the second Dutch side to book their place in the last 16 after Feyenoord had advanced on Tuesday after also beating an Italian opponent in AC Milan.

PSV was boosted by Olivier Boscagli's return. The center-back started a match for the Eindhovenaren for the first time since the end of January, when he picked up a muscle injury in the match against Liverpool.

The first half hour saw no significant chances. The smaller opportunities all went Juventus’ way. A cross for Randall Kolo Muani was just about too high for him to be able to aim the header toward goal, and Andrea Cambiaso hit a shot that had to be punched away by PSV keeper Walter Benitez.

Both teams were showing why they have been struggling in the last months with very few chances being created on a very dry and rough pitch in the Philips stadium.

The only real chance in the first half came to Juventus, and even that was a tough one to score. A chip by Teun Koopmeiners was missed by Ryan Flamingo, resulting in the ball coming to Kolo Muani, but Benitez came out quickly, making the angle too difficult for the French striker and resulting in the ball going wide.

Kolo Muani had an easier chance in the fifth minute of the second half. A chip over the defense found the striker, who took a touch before shooting with his weaker foot. The effort did not cause too much of a problem for Benitez in the end.

PSV took the lead in the match and leveled the score on aggregate with a goal in the 53rd minute. Noa Lang played a good, hard pass to Ivan Perisic. The ball looped up from his touch, but that proved no problem for the Croatian as he smashed a volley into the far corner to make it two goals in two games against Juventus.

Juventus equalized with a goal out of nowhere in the 65th minute. A cross headed out of the before it was smashed into the bottom corner by Timothy Weah. The referee initially ruled the goal out for offside before rewatching the goal on the monitor and deciding to award the goal.

This goal meant that PSV were going out, but they turned the game around again nine minutes later. Perisic continued his fantastic form in the Champions League for PSV by creating the goal once again. The winger's run and cross resulted in the ball going to Luuk de Jong, who deflected the ball with his body being unable to get a shot off. This resulted in the ball landing perfectly for Ismael Saibari, who smashed it home from close range.

Juventus seemed tired, and PSV were pushing for the winning goal in the 90 minutes, but the Italians were able to hang on to extra time.

It was almost the perfect start to extra time for the Eindhovenaren when Saibari had a huge chance to get his second goal of the match in just the second minute of extra time. The midfielder was played in by Guus Til, but his effort was poorly directed as it went straight at Juventus keeper Michele Di Gregorio.

But the miss did not matter as PSV got the vital goal to make it 3-1 on the night and 4-3 on aggregate in the eighth minute of extra time. A free kick by Joey Veerman found Johan Bakayoko. The Belgian smashed the ball hard into the box with his right foot before it deflected perfectly for Ryan Flamingo, who reacted the fastest to score his third goal in the Champions League this season and send the crowd in the Philips stadium into wild celebrations.

The match was now going up and down. Juventus had a chance through Nicolo Savona before Saibari missed another significant opportunity to put the game to bed.

This was all still in the first half of extra time, and there was more drama to come. Serbian striker Dusan Vlahovic’s effort hit the post from close range a minute before the halftime whistle of extra time.

Juventus seemed tired and out of ideas. The second half looked more like PSV was going to get another goal than an equalizer. A huge chance by Til was wasted after a fantastic attack from the home team.

PSV held on to advance to the last 16. They will find out whether they face Arsenal or Internazionale in the next round on Friday.
