FC Twente score last second penalty to beat Bodø/Glimt in first leg of Europa League tie

FC Twente scored a dramatic late winning goal to win the first leg of their tie with Bodø/Glimt 2-1 in the UEFA Europa League Play-Off round. Ricky van Wolfswinkel scored a last-gasp penalty after Sayallah Ltaeif and Patrick Berg had scored the earlier goals.

The home team made a great start to the game by scoring the opening goal in the fifth minute. Michel Vlap played a deep pass with the outside of his foot over Bodø/Glimt’s high line of defense, finding Sayfallah Ltaeif, who scored from an acute angle.

Joseph Oosting’s side came close to the second goal in the 32nd minute. Daan Rots cut inside before unleashing a hard shot, which was tipped onto the crossbar by Bodø/Glimt goalkeeper Nikita Khaikin. This meant that the halftime score was 1-0.

The atmosphere in the Grolsch Veste was fantastic throughout the match. It seemed to be affecting the Norwegian side as a few very sloppy moments resulted in Bart van Rooij’s shot rolling towards the goal before a defender for the Norwegian side was able to hook it away at the last second.

Despite this, Bodø/Glimt equalized in the 85th minute. Former Groningen full-back Isak Dybvik Määttä played a pass to the team’s captain, Patrick Berg, who hit a hard low shot into the goal to level the match at 1-1.

But that was not the last goal of the match as the home team scored a dramatic winner in the final seconds. A cross from Rots resulted in a penalty after the referee pointed to the spot for a handball by defender Jostein Gundersen. Twente’s experienced striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel took the penalty and scored it, which proved to be the last kick of the game.

Twente will travel to Norway to play the second leg next week at the Aspmyra stadium. First, the Tukkers will face RKC Waalwijk in the Eredivisie on Sunday.
