English production of Venus in Fur on stage in Amsterdam next week

The Orange Theatre Company (OTC) is bringing back the Tony award-winning play VENUS IN FUR, with performances slated for Amsterdam next week. Directed by Lora Mander, VENUS IN FUR is a captivating, dark, and comical power play. Written by American playwright David Ives, it explores themes of submission, power, control, and S&M in a provocative and at times, hilarious way.

The show returns to the stage for three nights beginning on February 13 at the KIT Live Theatre. The performance opens the newly renovated, intimate, and atmospheric theater that is opening its doors to the public, for the first time in 12 years. The KIT Live Theatre is housed in the unique building of the Royal Institute of the Tropics, making it a real asset for culture enthusiasts and the city.

The Audition

The plot unfolds in a single setting: a rehearsal room. Thomas (performed by Eli Thorne) is frustrated after a long day of failed auditions when Vanda (performed by Sairah Erens) arrives, seemingly unfit for the role. As the audition progresses, Vanda proves to be exceptionally well-prepared and plays the character with remarkable precision.

The line between reality and fiction blurs as they delve deeper into the script. "You don’t have to tell me about sadomasochism, I’m in the Theatre!" Vanda explains, whilst the two gradually become the protagonists in Ives' play-within-a-play.

★★★★ Rave reviews

The production received rave reviews in December when OTC premiered at KIT Live: “What’s not to love from this recent rendition of Venus in Fur from Orange Theatre Company? Performed by the talented and tempting Sairah Erens as Vanda Jordan and Eli Thorne as Thomas Novachek, you are in for a night to remember with David Ives’s play. It is a clever and complicated, and subtly confronting, well-written piece of theatre,” as reviewed by Arts Talk Magazine.

“Both Thorne and Erens deliver strong performances. They effortlessly switch between character and role, displaying boundless energy throughout the evening” Theatre Paradijs noted.

Valentine's Date Night

This captivating and funny play is jam-packed with razor-sharp observations and fantastic levels of tension. No wonder they are bringing it back. Don’t miss your chance to see the production by this ambitious international theatre company. It is the perfect way to spend your Valentine's Day.

On February 13, you can attend the special opening of OTC's new theater, with a champagne reception and Q&A included with every ticket. The rest of the run will take place on February 14, as well as two performances on the 15th. The Goddess of Love returns to the stage this Valentine so make sure to catch the electrifying VENUS IN FUR in Amsterdam!

Tickets can be purchased online, and range from 28.50 to 31.50 euros, with 10-euro discounts available for students on Friday and Saturday night. Small groups of six can splurge on the special Royal Valentine's Box, including two bottles of bubbly and snacks. The box costs 303 euros and includes six tickets.
