Piet Heintunnel reopens after second closure in two days
The Piet Heintunnel in Amsterdam-Oost reopened Wednesday evening following its second closure in as many days, according to the municipality of Amsterdam. The latest disruption was caused by a technical malfunction in the tunnel's control systems.
The tunnel, a vital link connecting the city center to eastern districts and the A10 ring road, was shut down for about three hours, resulting in approximately 15 minutes of additional travel time for drivers. Municipal authorities confirmed the malfunction had been resolved by early evening.
This follows a significant disruption on Tuesday, when a fire in the tunnel's service building caused a technical failure, forcing the tunnel’s closure for several hours. The fire left critical systems inoperable, and the tunnel only reopened late that night.
The Piet Heintunnel is one of Amsterdam’s key traffic arteries, making these disruptions particularly impactful for daily commuters and logistics operations. Authorities are reportedly investigating the causes of the malfunctions and the service building fire.
