Restoration of Utrecht's Dom Tower comes to an end after 5 years of work
After five years of work, the restoration of the 703-year-old Dom Tower in Utrecht is ending today. Pupils from a primary school in Utrecht will place the last stone back in the famous clock tower, RTL Nieuws reports.
The restoration cost approximately 37 million euros and should keep the tower in good shape for the next 50 years, according to responsible alderman Dennis de Vries.
During the work, all 10,000 stones in the Dom tower were examined one by one and assessed for whether they needed replacement. The four clock faces, the weather vane, the carillon, and the stained glass were also restored. And the tower now has new, permanent lighting.
The famous clock tower was in scaffolding for most of the past five years. The first layer of scaffolding came down in September last year. The last scaffolding disappeared last month.
The end of the restoration will be celebrated on Saturday, November 9. Queen Maxima will attend the celebration and switch on the new lighting.
