6 tips to make your homemade pizza tastier and better

Are you going to make pizza at home with your new pizza oven? Then you will definitely want to read these tips! With these 7 simple tips you will make a better and tastier homemade pizza, we bet!

Make your own sauce

Most pizzerias top their pizzas with tomato sauce, which sometimes doesn't have much flavour. When you get started at home, you can focus on flavour by choosing to use a homemade sauce. This gives you the chance to process exactly the herbs and flavour enhancers (hello red peppers) that you crave. Let it sit in the fridge overnight so that the flavour scan work their magic and then spread it on your pizza base.

Make your own dough

Making dough may seem difficult, but it only requires a few ingredients : flour, water, yeast, salt and sometimes a little olive oil. You can leave it to rise for anywhere from an hour to three or four days: if you keep your dough in the fridge, you can make it the night before you want to eat your pizza. Tip: the longer you leave it to rise, the more flavour it will have…

Think about the flour

Flour is not a product that can be stored indefinitely in your pantry. In fact, it tastes best when used fresh. If you take the time to make a homemade pizza crust, make sure to use a fresh bag of flour if your old one was opened more than a few months ago. Finely ground Italian flour is always a good option, especially for a home oven, but regular flour can work just as well. As long as it’s fresh!

Don’t use too any toppings

Although it may be tempting to top your pizza with a variety of toppings – think peppers, mushrooms, salami, tuna, etc. – you don’t need a lot of toppings for a good pizza. In fact, too many toppings can make your dough and toppings soggy. Also, some toppings , like mushrooms, contain more water than others, so it can be helpful to pre-fry them to dry them out a bit. Another alternative is to pat dry any wet ingredients, like olives or artichokes.

Choose tasty toppings

If you are selective with your toppings, make sure to use flavourful toppings. Think of minced garlic or thinly sliced chili pepper. Have you ever tried basil leaves? Delicious and light… A nice tip is to base your toppings on the season, then the vegetables are the freshest and therefore a lot more flavourful. Summer pizza with tropical fruit? Nice! Autumn pizza with feta and pumpkin? Yummy!

Embrace the baking sheet

You don’t need a fancy stone oven to make good pizza, although professional kitchen equipment, called horeca apparatuur in Dutch, always helps. All you need is an oven and a good baking sheet that doesn’t require baking paper. Grease the baking sheet with a thin layer of olive oil and then roll out the dough on it. By baking the pizzas this way, your pizzas will get a crispy crust. You can also easily remove the pizza from the baking sheet – win-win!
