Dutch tourist, 18, found dead at viewpoint in Thai jungle

An 18-year-old Dutch boy was found dead after he disappeared while on a hike in the Krabi jungle in Thailand with his parents. His body was later found at the Khao Ngon Nak viewpoint, the Telegraaf reports.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the boy from Noord-Holland had been found dead but could not say what happened. “The honorary consul is providing assistance to the relatives on site after this terrible incident,” a spokesperson told the Telegraaf.

On Wednesday, the boy and his parents were doing a popular hike on the Dragon’s Crest (Ngorn Nak) mountain in the Krabi jungle when the boy became tired. His parents decided to let him rest and walked down the mountain to get some food and drink, agreeing to meet back up with him and continue.

When they returned, their son was nowhere to be found. They called his phone but got no response. The Dutch couple went back down the mountain to seek help from the locals. The village elder was alerted at around 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, and a team of officials from the Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi-Phi National Park, police officers, and local officials were dispatched.

They arrived at the mountain late on Wednesday afternoon and searched for the Dutch tourist through the night but found no trace of him. His body was eventually found at the viewpoint the next day. What happened to him is still unclear.
