Increase in water board tax
The Association of Water Boards is increasing the water board tax because they must 'keep the Netherlands livable for future generations'. Are you in a family with your own home? Then the water board tax will increase by an average of 50 euros on an annual basis. For someone who lives alone in a rental home, the water board tax will be approximately 20 euros higher.
The situation
Last year (2022-2023) there was already an increase from 156 euros for an average single tenant to 168 euros and now this will be another two tens of euros higher: 188 euros. The Union of Water Boards is faced with various challenges that cause them to incur higher costs.
Vincent Lokin, board member of the Union of Water Boards, states, among other things, that for some water boards the tax receipts are insufficient to cover all costs. He also indicates that water boards have to pay 2 and sometimes almost 3 times more for the energy they purchase. The work is becoming increasingly challenging: more extreme weather and at the same time higher demands are placed on sewage treatment and sufficient clean water. Drier summers alternated with the need to work on safe dikes and combat flooding, there is a lot to do for the Union of Water Boards.
Furthermore, water quality in the Netherlands is also under pressure. There is intensive use of land and more and more substances, such as PFAS, are entering the water that we actually do not want in there. A significant investment is therefore required to make every effort.
What can you do at home?
Water conservation is a pressing concern in today's world. As individuals, our actions collectively impact the environment and its resources, including water. Exploring effective strategies to reduce water usage is vital for a sustainable future. To make a meaningful difference, it's crucial to comprehend how much water we use and where we can cut back. Often, simple modifications in our daily lives can yield substantial savings.
Leaks might seem insignificant, but they contribute significantly to wastage. Regularly checking and fixing leaks in faucets en pipes, can save gallons of water annually. Investing in water-efficient appliances, such as high-efficiency washing machines, can drastically reduce water consumption without compromising functionality.
Beyond fixing leaks and upgrading appliances, altering daily habits can significantly impact water conservation efforts. Small actions like using dishwashers and washing machines only when full can collectively conserve significant amounts of water.
In gardening, opting for drought-resistant plants, mulching, and employing efficient irrigation methods like drip irrigation can limit water usage substantially.
Your own bathroom
When you go to a sanitary ware store, you can look at more aspects than just a wide range of complete shower cabins. You may also be looking at options for going from bath to shower. Then you also quickly save water.
Designing and using a bathroom to minimize water wastage involves several simple yet effective steps:· Install Water-Efficient Fixtures: Replace old faucets, showerheads, and toilets with low-flow or water-saving models. These fixtures use less water without compromising performance.
· Fix Leaks Promptly: Regularly check for leaks in pipes, faucets, and toilets. Even minor leaks can waste significant amounts of water over time.
· Opt for Shorter Showers: Encourage shorter shower durations. Consider using a timer or a water-saving showerhead to limit water usage.
· Use a Dual Flush Toilet: Consider installing a dual flush toilet that allows users to choose between a full or partial flush, saving water with each use.
· Collect and Reuse Water: Place a bucket in the shower to collect excess water while it warms up. This water can be used for watering plants or flushing toilets.
Other options:· Turn Off Taps When Not in Use: Encourage family members to turn off taps while brushing teeth or lathering during handwashing to prevent unnecessary water flow.
· Promote Conscious Water Use: Educate household members about the importance of water conservation. Encourage habits like not letting the water run while soaping dishes or washing hands.
· Optimize Laundry Practices: Use washing machines only for full loads and consider adjusting settings to minimize water usage.
· Consider Eco-Friendly Materials: When redesigning or renovating the bathroom, opt for eco-friendly materials that require less water for maintenance.
· Regular Maintenance: Keep bathroom fixtures and pipes well-maintained to prevent unexpected leaks or water wastage.
By implementing these strategies, a bathroom can be designed and utilized in a way that significantly reduces water wastage, contributing to a more sustainable household.
Community Engagement
Individual efforts magnify when communities unite for a common cause—water conservation being one of them. Spreading awareness about water conservation through local initiatives, social media, or workshops can inspire others to take action.
Joining hands with local conservation programs or volunteering for activities like river clean-ups or tree planting can contribute directly to preserving water sources.
Conclusion? Every drop saved today secures a better tomorrow. By implementing small changes at home, adjusting daily habits, and engaging with the community, individuals can significantly reduce water consumption and play a pivotal role in preserving this precious resource.
