Apeldoorn commemorates Queen's Day attack

Today Apeldoorn is commemorating the 10th anniversary of an attack on the Royal Family in the city on Queen's Day 2009. Today ten years ago Karst T. drove his car through the Queen's Day crowd in an attempt to crash into a bus containing the Royal Family. A total of eight people were killed, including T. himself, and dozens were injured, Omroep Gelderland reports.

Family members of the victims and others involved will gather at a closed meeting in Apeldoorn on Tuesday.

There will also be a public commemoration at the Grote Kerk. The church will be open between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. for those who want to pay their respects. There will be no official program at the church, but visitors will have the opportunity to leave flowers or light a candle. There will also be a display of cards, letters and toys left at the scene of the attack on April 30th, 2009.

Apeldoorn initially did no want to hold a public commemoration, but decided to open the church to the public due to great interest.
