Amsterdam to get 172 extra cops

Amsterdam is getting 172 extra police officers. This capacity was freed up because the detention center in Amsterdam is being moved from three locations to the Judicial Complex at Schiphol, where responsibility for the detainees will be taken over by the custodial institutions service DJI, Minister Ferdinand Grapperhaus of Justice and Security announced, the Telegraaf reports.

The Judicial Complex at Schiphol, which also houses the high security court, has many empty spaces. These can be used to house Amsterdam detainees. The first group is expected to be moved to the new location by the end of the year, according to the newspaper.

Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema is "very happy" with the expansion of the Dutch capital's police force, a spokesperson said to the Telegraaf. "The city needs police officers on the street and they will be put to work fairly quickly."

In the long term, however, the Amsterdam corps will have to give up 54 officers, who will be deployed at other police units, the Minister said.
