Many Dutch poorly prepared for emergencies at home: Red Cross

Nearly 40 percent of Dutch have no plan in place for what to do if they can't get into their home due to fire, gas leak or evacuation, according to a study by the Red Cross. Many Dutch people will not have access to important information, like telephone numbers and insurance policies, if they can't get into their home, ANP reports.

The majority of people in the Netherlands will be in a pinch if their phone is left behind in an inaccessible home - most people have telephone numbers stored in their smartphone and don't know them by heart. 66 percent of Dutch people don't know their children's numbers by heart, and 44 percent don't know their partner's. Around 80 percent can get hold of the number elsewhere, however.

The Red Cross also found that three quarters of Dutch have never discussed where they will live temporarily if they can't get into their homes. Though most Dutch have made such arrangements for their pets - 63 percent of pet owners know where they will accommodate their pet if they can't be at home.
