Dutch spent 22.51 billion euros online last year

Over 13 million Dutch spent a total of 22.51 billion euros on online purchases in 2017, 13 percent more than in 2016, according to the latest figures from Thuiswinkel Market Monitor. Last year 95 percent of Dutch made at least one online purchase, AD reports.

According to Wijnand Jongen, director of Thuijswinkel.org, online shopping "is becoming increasingly important within the Dutch retail world". Within the retail sector, the share of online shopping is now almost 10 percent.

Most online purchases by far were made using a laptop, followed by a desktop computer. Though smartphone use for online shopping is increasing in popularity. In the last months of last year, 28 percent of Dutch online shoppers used their smartphone. With that smartphones surpassed tablets and are now the third most used device for online shopping.
