Dress warmly for Carnival, Red Cross warns

The Red Cross calls on Carnival celebrators to dress warmly in the coming days. The cold weather combined with alcohol consumption can quickly lead to hypothermia, according to the aid organization, NU.nl reports.

A study by the Red Cross revealed that only about a third of Dutch can recognize all symptoms of hypothermia immediately. So the aid organization decided to share tips on how to avoid it.

Dress warmly in multiple layers. Don't drink too much alcohol - blood vessels dilate with alcohol use, which means you lose body heat faster. Eat enough food and drink plenty of water to keep your energy up and stay warm, the Red Cross advises.

If you see someone showing signs of hypothermia, like shivering and blue lips, take him to a warm place and give him something sugary to drink, according to the Red Cross.
