Dutch TV maker, Red Cross team live through night of bombardment in Yemen

The Red Cross team in Yemen and Dutch TV maker Floortje Dessing lived through a harrowing night filled with bombardments in the Yemen capital of Sana'a. "The bombardments go on and on. It's a massive noise. You can also hear people screaming outside", Red Cross spokesperson Merlijn Stoffels said to NOS.

The team is currently waiting for the route from the Red Cross bomb shelter to the airport to be safe, Stoffels said. "We're stuck here, we can do nothing but wait." Red Cross employees elsewhere in Sana'a are investigating the route.

Dessing traveled to Yemen with the Red Cross to draw attention to the needs of the country's 20 million inhabitants. Years of fighting between the Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia and Iran-backed Houthi rebels, resulted in a shortage of water, food and medical assistance. The country also does not have sufficient surgical equipment to help the wounded.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called for the warring parties to cease fire, saying that he is very concerned about the upsurge in violence. According to him, the new eruption of violence could not come at a worse time. Shortly before the series of attacks over the past days, thousands of people died of cholera.
