Keukenhof opens for the season with Mondriaan floral work

The Keukenhof opens for the season on Thursday. This season will be in the theme of Dutch Design, with floral designs inspired by works by Dutch artists. The center piece this year is a floral work inspired by Mondriaan, NU.nl reports.

The Mondriaan work is a 250 square meters floral mosaic designed in the famous Mondriaan colored squares and rectangles. A massive 80 thousand bulbs were planted in two layers to keep the mosaic in bloom throughout the spring. It consists of tulips, grape hyacinths and crocus.

A total of 7 million bulbs were planted throughout the park this year.

The park also celebrates a new entrance this year, built by architect Mecanoo from Delft. The building and further access to the gardens were spatially designed to ease the flow of visitors. Over the past years the Keukenhof welcomed more than a million visitors per year.

The Keukenhof is open through spring. It closes on Sunday, May 21st.
