Prosecutor demands €1.2 million from horse meat fraudster

The Public Prosecutor plans to demand 1.2 milion euros from bankrupt meath wholesaler Willy Selten, according to Brabants Dagblad. In 2011 and 2012 Selten sold horese meat as beef. According to the prosecutor, he earned 1.2 million euros in doing so. Selten appears in court again on Monday.

The meat trader's company, also named Willy Selten, closed down in 2013 shortly after the Dutch Food Safety Authority designated its meat products as "potentially dangerous to human health". The company went bankrupt a short time later.

Selten is also charged with forging one or more documents. In 2015 he was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison for largue-scale fraud involving meat. Earlier this year a court in Oost-Brabant ordered Selten to pay 1 million euros to the administrator handling the company's bankruptcy.
