Netherlands to get 100,000 hectares of new forests in climate change fight

The Dutch forestry sector wants to build a total of 100 thousand hectares of new forests in the country in the coming decades. The proposal to do so will be presented at the National Climate Summit in Rotterdam on Wednesday, Trouw reports.

Constructing these forests will cost about 3 billion euros, spread over 30 years. The sector believes that the plan will contribute to meeting the energy and climate targets set for 2050. If the proposal is accepted, new forests will be set up in the Groene Hart in the Randstad and the Veenkolonien in Groningen and Drenthe.

"It wil have great impact, politicians ultimately have to decide, but we think that this action plan is necessary and achievable", Harry Hekhuis, head of management and production at the Forestry Commission, said to Trouw.
