Prosecutor appeals 3 year sentence for high speed driver that caused fatal highway crash

The Public Prosecutor is appealing against the court's decision to sentence Neil van der L. to 3 years in prison for causing a fatal car accident on the A2 near Maarssen last year, NU.nl reports. The Prosecutor demanded eight years for the accident that killed 42-year-old father Ricardo van Jaarsveld and injured five others. Two children are now permanently disabled. The suspect's lawyer is also appealing. The accident happened on December 30th, 2015, on the A2 near Maarssen. Van der L. was under the influence of speed and marijuana and crashed into a car carrying four adults and three children at very high speed. The court ruled that Van der L. was in a psychosis at the time of the accident, which means it could not be classified as manslaughter or attempted manslaughter. Which is why the sentence is lower than the prosecutor demanded. But the Public Prosecutor disagrees, arguing that there was conditional intent. The man ignored several signals that his high speed could lead to an accident. He did not slow down, instead increasing his speed. According to the prosecutor, this shows that he accepted the chance that he could cause a potentially fatal collision.
