Institutionalized psychiatric treatment for man who blew up apartment

On Thursday the court in Leeuwarden sentenced Folkert F. to institutionalized psychiatric care for causing an explosion in his Drachten apartment in December last year, ANP reports. The court ruled that the 47-year-old man was insane when he caused the explosion and therefore can not be sent to prison. The sentence corresponds to what the Prosecutor demanded. During the trial, F. told the court that he heard the voices of God and his deceased mother. He therefore decided to fill a rubber boat with gas so he could go to his mother in heaven. The explosion resulted in the collapse of 12 apartments in the building and another six homes were damaged beyond repair. Almost all of the building's residents found new housing. A portion of the building was demolished in January because it was unstable.
