Netherlands earmarks €2 million to assist, stabilize Libya

The Netherlands made 2 million euros available for an international fund aimed at increasing stability in Libya, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Wednesday. Among other things, the fund will go towards rebuilding the country, supporting local governments and supporting the local reconciliation process between the new government and militia groups. Minister Bert Koenders of Foreign Affairs visited Tripoli on Thursday. There he spoke extensively with Fayez Serraij, the Prime Minister of the newly established unity government in the country. They discussed the political and humanitarian situation in Libya as well as the regional migration issues. Koenders also expressed the Netherlands support for the new unity government, established after about 18 months of negotiations led by the United States. "After a dark period of violence and despair, hope and peace now shines on the horizon for Libya. But to achieve this effectively, it is essential to continue to work towards the unity of the country." Koenders said. "It is now important that the parliament recognizes the new government. In addition the government has to achieve quick results by, among other things, improving the living conditions of the Libyans and continuing the fight against ISIS, to maintain momentum."
