Some 2,900 kilos of cocaine caught at Rotterdam port

Customs officials found roughly 2,900 kilograms of cocaine hidden inside a shipping container. The drugs were discovered on March 11. mixed in with a shipment of furniture and moving boxes sent from Curaçao to an address in Kranenburg, Germany. German authorities were also notified of the find. The Dutch public prosecutor’s office estimated the value of the cocaine at 100 million euros. The contraband was destroyed immediately.

The cocaine was wrapped in hundreds of individual packages, and hidden within many covered crates in the container. There were about 100 moving boxes and 200 crates in total along with the furniture, but it is not clear how many of the boxes and crates were actually used to transport cocaine. No arrests were announced in connection with the drug seizure. The Dutch prosecutor is overseeing a joint investigation combining the resources of the Customs office, Port Police, financial crimes unit FIOD and the specialized Rotterdam Hit-and-Run Cargo Team. Authorities withheld the release of the information so it would not interfere with the investigation.
