Nijntje creator Dick Bruna wins lifetime achievement award

Dick Bruma, the creator behind popular children's character Nijntje, or Miffy in English, was awarded the Max Velthuijs prize for his entire life's work, NOS reports. The jury called Bruna a master of the clear line "He knows how to achieve maximum effect wit a minimal color palette. The apparent ease with which eh brings space into a perspective-free plane is unparalleled." the jury report reads, adding that someone needs a lot of talent to achieve such enchanting simplicity. Bruna has received numerous awards and many exhibitions feature his work, including collections in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Centraal Museum Utrecht. The Max Velthuijs Prize will be awarded to Bruna on September 22nd in the Literary Museum in The Hague. The award is linked to a 60 thousand euros cash prize. It is awarded to a Dutch illustrator every three years. The award is named for Max Velthuijs, creator of the Kikker picture books. Kikker is also called "Frog" in some English titles.
