Woman suddenly gives birth in Rotterdam gas station

A Rotterdam couple wound up giving birth to a baby girl at a local gas station Thursday afternoon. The couple were trying to get to an area hospital when they flagged down a police van for assistance. “I’m in labor!” the pregnant woman shouted at the two officers while stopped at a red light. One of the agents jumped into the car with the couple to assist, while her partner led the way in the squad car. “They wanted to go to the Erasmus [Medical Center], but I saw that we just would not make it,” one of the officers involved said, according to a police statement. Instead, they tried for the nearby IJsselland Hospital, but had to pull over on Capelseweg in the Rotterdam suburb Capelle aan den IJssel. After pulling into the gas station, employees sprung into action to close off the location so no customers could get in. “The baby came quickly and healthily into the world, an was warmed with blankets from the police van,” the police said. An ambulance arrived soon after, bringing the mother and baby girl to an area hospital. The family is said to be doing well.
