Nijmegen station bathroom matron, 83, retires after 63 years

Toos Scheffinga worked her last day as bathroom matron at Nijmegen station on Tuesday. The 83 year old woman retired after 63 years of service. The station bathrooms are now being managed by German company Sanifair. They work with gates that open after you drop 50 cents into the machine, so no need for a bathroom matron any longer, AD reports. On her last day Toos was serenaded by 20 hikers. "Came to have a pee by me every Tuesday before they hit the road", she explained to AD. On Twitter her regulars sounded a call for everyone to bring a flower to say goodbye. Toos explained her regular days to the newspaper. For a morning service she was up at 5:00 a.m. "At 6:10 in the bus and at 6:30 at the station", so that she could get everything ready for the first customers. "Four layer toilet paper. That is the best", she said. "I brought candles. Dolls, paintings. There was even an aquarium with a fish." The elderly matron is sad that this part of her life is now over. "I would have liked to continue. I liked this. Always among the people. Everybody knows you", she said to the newspaper. "This is really over now.
