Netherlands received 4,200 refugees last week

Roughly 4,200 new refugees were registered in the Netherlands last week, according to figures released by the Minister of Security and Justice, Klaas Dijkhoff, following a meeting with cabinet members. This influx of refugees could be attributed to the refusal of Eastern European countries to participate in the mandatory redistribution of refugees in Europe as well as Minister Dijkhoffs’ decision not to re-introduce border controls. “We will see what it produces, and whether it is necessary to take further steps,” Dijkhoff said to reporters regarding mobile border controls, according to newswire ANP. Patrols along the border were somewhat tightened in recent weeks. Emergency shelters are well underway after the municipalities took further action to provide temporary reception areas. “Currently, the government has no plans to allocate addition funds for assistance to refugee camps in the region,” said Finance Minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem. At the moment many refugees are staying at a campsite near the village of Vierhouten in Veluwe, in temporary accommodation. A sport hall in Zeist will be filled to capacity next week when it receives another 79 families, mainly of Syrian descent. The municipality of Nunspeet, which oversees the village of Vierhouten, will hold talks with the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) within next few days to discuss progress.
