Teen cardiology deaths put hospital department in turmoil

Two missed diagnosis that resulted in the deaths of two teenagers have the cardiology department of the IJsseland hospital in Capelle aan den IJssel in turmoil. In May this year a 19 year old boy passed away after twice being examined by cardiologists at the hospital, who concluded that he was not suffering from a dangerous condition, the Telegraaf reports. Two years ago a 16 year old girl died of cardiac arrest while being treated in the hospital. Here too cardiologist missed a diagnosis, resulting in her not being treated with the correct medicines. The responsible doctors were reprimanded by the Disciplinary Tribunal for the death of the girl. The boy's parents have also submitted a complaint against the treating doctor, the same one who treated the girl. The doctor in question is now working at another hospital. Of the six people working in the cardiology department, four have now been replaced, Peter Draaisma, CEO of the hospital, said to the newspaper, so patients do not have to be concerned. "The functioning of these cardiologists is good, only the method of working of the original teams when it came to treating young people was not. Therefore we have taken measures."
