Box of monkeys found dumped on Utrecht sidewalk

An Utrecht resident was completely bewildered by an unexpected gift on Wednesday morning. Someone had dumped a box containing two white eared marmosets on the sidewalk near her home. Bea Keijzer, founder of the Utrecht Pet Hotline, was the one to find the monkeys, which she named Angelina and Brad. "Every day I help out injured and sick animals and I'm used to it, but I've never experienced something like this." she told the Telegraaf. "I think the monkeys were brought to me because of the work I do." The two marmosets have since been handed over to Foundation AAP. "At least one of the two is in bad shape", spokesperson Shanti Haas told the newspaper. "That one is clearly smaller than the other, in poor condition and has a hairless tail. That's a sign of neglect. They are both also very stressed." White eared marmosets are some of the smallest monkeys in the world. They live mainly in Brazil and South America. Finding them in the Netherlands is quite extraordinary, especially as it has been illegal to keep monkeys as pets since 1972.
