Video: Sixty Canadian WWII vets at war remembrance
About 2 thousand people, including 60 Canadian World War II veterans between the ages of 90 and 97 years, attended a memorial service at the Canadian cemetery in Groesbeek on Sunday afternoon.
These veterans fought in the Netherlands against the Germans in 1944 and 1945. This memorial service was held to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Netherlands' liberation.
Speakers at the memorial service included Lieutenant General Bart Hoitink, who spoke on behalf of the Dutch government, and Laureen Harper, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper's wife.
A total of 2,338 Canadians are buried in the cemetery in Groesbeek. They were killed in battle in Germany and were buried on the Dutch side of the border at the request of the Canadian government.
