Ebola fundraiser brings in €10 mil.; a third already spent

Dutch initiative Giro 555 collected a total of 10.5 million euros to aid in the fight against Ebola. The campaign is officially winding down now when the virus appears to have resurfaced in Guinea and Liberia, where the number of Ebola patients is reaching the year’s highest, writes Trouw. The Dutch public deposited over 10.5 million euros in the accounts of ten collaborating organisations working towards fighting the illness and assisting its victims. Of that, 3.2 million was already spent. Two-thirds of the expenditure went to healthcare, but also 15,280 protective suits were purchased to protect personnel from getting infected on-sight. Almost twenty percent of the amount raised went to sanitation, water and food for families affected by Ebola. Another half a million in administrative costs accrued. The accumulated amount is expected to be fully spent before the end of the year.
