Leiden best Dutch univ., 64th worldwide, in Times Top 200
Leiden University has taken first place over the University of Amsterdam and Delft University as top university in the Netherlands in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2014/15. The Rankings judge universities upon four core missions and thirteen performance indicators, giving Leiden high marks for research, citations and international outlook.
In the rankings, Leiden retained the same ranking as in 2012/13 landing squarely at 64th in the world. However no Dutch university was able to break into the top 50.
“The city is Leiden's campus, as befits the institution's status as a gift to the citizens by William of Orange in 1575 for withstanding a siege by the Spanish," the review said. "It has some 17,000 students and 4,000 academic staff in six faculties of archaeology, humanities, law, medicine, mathematics and natural sciences, and social and behavioural sciences.”
Thirteen criteria grouped under five categories were used to determine the rankings, including teaching, research, citations (research impact), international outlook, and industry income.
Across the Netherlands, Delft University of Technology was ranked 71st, followed by the Erasmus University Rotterdam placing 72nd, Wageningen University and Research Center at 73rd, University of Amsterdam at 77th, and Utrecht University coming in at 79th.
Notably, the Times Rankings convey a very different picture from the QS World Rankings published last month, which placed the University of Amsterdam as the top Dutch university and number 50 in the world.
The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) has again been awarded the best university in the world, followed by Harvard University, the University of Oxford, and Stanford University.
Alongside the University Rankings, Times also published the World Reputation Rankings, providing a list of the top 100 most powerful university brands. Delft University of Technology was the only university in the Netherlands to make it into the list gaining 42nd place.
