Labour MEP in hot water over expense scandal

MEP, Judith Merkies, is no longer welcome in the European mission she's part of. Her fellow PvdA-MEP's, Thijs Berman and Emine Bozkurt, requested the PvdA-board to end her membership. This was announced by Berman and Bozkurt Wednesday afternoon. Merkies violated their trust by not honoring existing financial agreements, leaving Berman and Bozkurt no other choice than immediately suspending the coöperation. Judithmerkies

Wikimedia commons Merkies billed 31,000 euros in legal aid expenses to the European Parliament, at the expense of the mission's staffing budget, without consulting with her fellow MEP's. 2 law firms had assisted Merkies late last year in a lawsuit against the PvdA board. Both the leader of the social democrats under which the PvdA resorts and the chairman of the European Parliament have been notified of the issue. The PvdA board is considering the matter, according to a spokesperson. The integrity commission is asked to review whether Merkies did indeed violate the agreements of the PvdA European Parliament mission.
