Netherlands-based chemical weapons watchdog wins Nobel Prize

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), based in The Hague, Netherlands, has received the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to eliminate chemical weapons. The prize consists of a medal, a diploma and a cash award of nearly $1.2 million, CNN reports. According the Norwegian Nobel Committee, a reason for selecting the OPCW was to point out the progress in eliminating chemical weapons around the world, CNN said. "We wanted to give a signal to the world that now we have the possibility to do away with a whole category of weapons of mass destruction," said Thorbjorn Jagland, chairman of the Nobel Committee.
