Schultz Says Asphalt Is Not The Solution

Minister Melanie Schulz of Infrastructure thinks that constructing more roads is not the ultimate solution to solve traffic problems. Their should be more creative and innovative ways to solve the problem of the congested roads, she said in the program Buitenhof on Sunday.

“Because of urbanization we have to lok differently at the problem. You can make seven ring ways around a city but not seven roads leading into the city center. So we have to find other ways how to get the people into the city center. That can be done by letting people travel at different times or use another way of transportation, but it is also possible to use smart technologies.”

An example of the use of smart technologies could for instance be the use of apps who give the traveler the right information where exactly it is congested and where to find a parking space. In Rotterdam more employees of the harbor use electrical scooters to drive past the traffic jams.

The PVV is not happy with the statements of the minister. MP Machiel de Graaf thinks that the VVD must do much more for car drivers. Driving a car is very expensive nowadays and the car owners get almost nothing in return. “The minister is doing nothing for motorists.”
