More money vanished from PvdA Amersfoort

Amersfoort PvdA reported embezzlement to the police. Tens of thousands of euros disappeared from the party finances over a period of time. The full extent of the fraud is under investigation, according to chairman Hinloopen. The PvdA finances were managed by the Monday deceased councilor Ramón Álvarez Smits. Smits Álvarez had been missing for twelve days, when he was found dead in a river near the Spanish Ponte Ulla on Monday. He probably jumped off a bridge. election_poster_PvdA

Amersfoort Mayor Bolsius pressing charges over the leaking of a confidential report on his performance may have also influenced his actions. Smits Álvarez was one of the councilors focused on, in the research of the National Police. On the day of his suicide Smits Álvarez wrote a farewell letter to a Spanish journalist who had interviewed him many times. He wrote he had confessed his sins in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. RTV Utrecht reported last week that the Labour councilor lied about his employer for years. He told everyone he worked at health insurer Agis, but in reality his contract had not been renewed since 2010. Smits Alvarez ran for the party leadership of the Amersfoort Labour Party in the municipal elections. His party had called on him Monday to report. The just wanted to forgive and forget and go back to work.
