Maxima Queen Regent
In case king Willem-Alexander dies, unexpectedly, before 2021, queen Maxima will become regent of princess Amalia. This is part of a law proposal which was sent to the House and the Senate.
The law proposal is meant to have a hassle free continuation of the kingship in case of such a calamity.

Queen Emma
Every family situation is different and things change in time. The last time a regent was actually in function is about hundred years ago. King Willem III passed away while the heiress, princess Wilhelmina, was only ten years old. Queen Emma, the spouse of Willem III, was regent for 8 years. Queen Emma did a good job and improved the way people thought about the monarchy. She frequently made short trips with princess Wilhelmina during which the people could come in direct contact with the queen-to-be.

Of course nobody hopes that it will ever be necessary, but things have to be arranged. Maxima would become Queen regent if Willem-Alexander dies before 2021. She would keep the parental authority, but she would be assisted by a team of five. The family will appoint two of them and the other team members will be the vice chairman of the Council of State, the so called ‘underking’, the chairman of the Court of Audits and the president of the Supreme Court of the Netherlands.
In the unfortunate case that Maxima would also pass away before 2021, prince Constantijn, the brother of Willem-Alexander, will become regent.
