Four Lesser-Known Techniques to Stop Daily Stress in its Tracks

Do you feel overwhelmed by the world around you? Is it difficult to decompress after a long way at work? You could very well be one of the millions who suffers from chronic stress. If left unchecked, this condition may begin to take a toll on your health. The good news is that there are plenty of ways to obtain a bit of much-needed emotional "breathing room".

However, what if you do not have the time to head off to the gym, or to join a meditation class? Let us examine four stress-busting habits that can be enjoyed from the comfort of your own home.

Music Soothes the Savage Beast

Did you know that playing an instrument such as the piano can lower your blood pressure, reduce your heart rate, and lead to a greater sense of mental clarity? Even if your fingers have never touched a key, it is always possible to participate in a virtual piano lesson to wrap your head around the basics. You can then progress at your own pace (depending on your schedule).

The Printed Word

Not only is reading a great way to stimulate your intellectual faculties, but it can also be used as a form of proactive meditation. Becoming immersed in a specific narrative can help to take your mind off of typical stressors, and there are literally thousands of genres to consider. Even reading for no more than five minutes has been shown to reduce feelings of anxiety. Whether borrowing a book from your local library, or downloading a PDF file from an online source, knowledge is power!

Remember to Breathe

Believe it or not, the simple act of breathing can dramatically lower many of the biochemical markers associated with stress. Breathing cleanses our bodies of toxins, it helps to sharpen our mental focus, and it will even result in a mild state of (natural) euphoria. Breathing exercises are excellent ways to get "back to the basics".

Cold Water

Recent studies have found that cold water may have an impact on our levels of perceived stress. Pour a few drops of cold water on your wrists, or dab water behind your ears. Although this might appear to be a rather simplistic approach, many individuals can attest to the positive benefits.

Although it is impossible to completely eliminate stress from our lives, there are still many ways in which we can mitigate the associated symptoms. After all, life is too short to be burdened by incessant worries!
