Waadhoeke council rejects anonymous Facebook groups focused on local politics

The municipal council of Waadhoeke has publicly criticized anonymous Facebook groups discussing local politics, saying meaningful civic debate requires transparency about who is participating.

In a statement released Thursday and signed by all 29 council members, the council said it welcomes engagement from residents but cannot properly consider concerns raised by people who do not identify themselves.

The statement specifically mentioned Facebook groups including “Waadhoeke for Livability” and “Franeker for Livability.” According to the council, posts in those groups are “often factually incorrect” and frequently contain “indecent expressions aimed at individuals.”

Council members said the organizers behind the groups deliberately remain anonymous, which they say makes dialogue impossible.

“The council cannot weigh the interests of anonymous persons and cannot engage in dialogue with them because they are anonymous,” the statement said.
