Temps up to 18°C this week with mainly clear skies

The Netherlands will see a mild start to March with temperatures reaching up to 18°C and mostly clear skies for much of the week, according to the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI). “There will be sunny spells and it will remain dry. Temperatures will be (well) above the long-term average,” the KNMI predicted. The national average for the first ten days of March is a high of 8.5 degrees and a low of 2.1 degrees, measured at KNMI headquarters in De Bilt, Utrecht, considered a meteorological mean for the country.

On Sunday, sunshine dominates much of the country in the morning, especially in the east and northeast, while northern areas see more clouds. Clouds will increase from the southwest, bringing rain to parts of the country in the afternoon. Temperatures will range from 10–14 degrees, with cooler readings along the coast and on the Wadden Islands. Winds from the south will be moderate inland and fairly strong at sea, in the Wadden Sea, and around the IJsselmeer. Evening rain will taper off from the southwest, and overnight lows will drop to 5–7 degrees.

Monday will be mostly sunny with very mild temperatures. Scattered clouds may linger in northern regions in the morning. Temperatures will reach 13–15 degrees in the north and west and 16–17 degrees elsewhere, with the highest readings in the south. Winds from the southeast will remain moderate. Clear skies Monday night will allow temperatures to fall to 2 degrees in the east and 6 degrees in the west.

From Tuesday through Thursday, dry conditions and sunshine will continue, with only minor cloud cover. Tuesday will see a few small cumulus clouds in the afternoon, with temperatures rising to 15–17 degrees inland and 12–14 degrees in northern and western areas.

Wednesday will bring clouds to the north but sun in the south, with highs of 11–16 degrees depending on cloud cover. Thursday will be the warmest day, with temperatures reaching 12–14 degrees in the north and 15–18 degrees elsewhere. Nights will remain cool, ranging from 3–7 degrees, with light frost possible at ground level.

The nice spring weather should continue from March 8 into the middle of the month, the KNMI said. More “sunny spells” and above-average temperatures are expected, with only a “small chance” of rainfall.
