Icy roads keep Drenthe and Groningen on yellow alert

Drenthe and Groningen remain under a yellow alert on Sunday morning as icy conditions continue to affect roads. The warning, in effect due to freezing rain, signals potential slippery conditions in the northeast, KNMI warns. A new yellow alert for Groningen and Drenthe will begin at 9 p.m. Sunday and will last until at least Monday morning.

Sunday morning is mostly cloudy, with occasional light rain. Northern areas are colder, with temperatures slightly above freezing. In Groningen, temperatures are around 1 degree, and minor frost is reportedly present in the northern part of the province. Roads are mostly free of ice so far.

By Sunday afternoon, skies are expected to remain largely cloudy. Light rain might fall intermittently. Temperatures are expected to reach 2 to 4 degrees in the northeast, 5 to 7 degrees in central and eastern regions, and 7 to 9 degrees in the south and west. A moderate southeast wind is likely.

Sunday evening and overnight will bring more clouds and scattered rain. In the northeast, light freezing is expected. “Later in the evening, it will start to freeze lightly in the northeast, and during the night, frost will expand across Groningen and parts of Drenthe and Friesland. If rain continues, localized icy patches may occur,” the forecast states. Most rain is expected late at night in the south and southwest, with temperatures between 2 and 5 degrees.

In the south, temperatures are expected to remain mild, reaching 7 to 9 degrees, while the central regions see 2 to 5 degrees. The northeast faces the coldest conditions, with frost and localized ice possible.
