Experts say rebuild of Vondelkerk tower is possible; Crowdfunding launched
Crowdfunding initiatives have been launched for individuals wishing to contribute to the potential restoration of the Vondelkerk. The church tower burned down on New Year’s Eve. The Hart voor het Vondelpark Foundation has opened a dedicated account, and Stichting Vondelkerk 2026 is also collecting donations.
The fire is believed to have been sparked by fireworks that reached the church tower. The tower collapsed entirely just hours after New Year’s, and the interior, frequently used for weddings and concerts, is regarded as lost.
Stadsherstel Amsterdam, the church’s owner since 1996, is currently evaluating the damage. While the restoration is expected to be expensive, there is optimism that the building can be saved, as the outer walls remain intact.
Architect Andre van Stigt told Het Parool that a rebuild is possible. “The craftsmanship needed to reconstruct such a tower certainly exists in the Netherlands,” Van Stigt said. The architect had already saved the church in 1981 when it was at risk of demolition. He did this by occupying the building before restoring it legally after the committee he was in purchased it. He already has the structural plans prepared.
The local residents were able to return to their homes on Thursday. Dozens of residents had spent New Year's Eve and much of New Year's Day in a temporary shelter on the P.C. Hooftstraat while the area was cleared of soot and ash. The temporary shelter has now been closed.
Power was temporarily turned off for about 90 households on Vondelstraat as a precaution during the firefighting, and it was restored later on Thursday.
The Liberty Church congregation, which has been based in the Vondelkerk since 2017, reacted in shock. “This building carries countless meaningful memories, both for our community and for the city of Amsterdam.”
Afternoon services will take place at the Thomaskerk in Amsterdam-Zuid, while a venue for the morning services is still being arranged. “We are currently reviewing our options for Sunday morning services. We are grateful for your patience and prayers as we navigate this unexpected situation.”
Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema called the church one of Amsterdam’s “most intimate monuments.” Authorities are considering a central restoration fund to bring together the various separate initiatives.
