Icy roads and sudden dense fog prompt code yellow warning in much of the Netherlands

The Dutch weather service KNMI issued a code yellow warning early Saturday for hazardous road conditions and dense fog across much of the Netherlands, citing the risk of icy roads and sharply reduced visibility. The warning is expected to remain in effect until at least 10:00 a.m.

The warning, issued at 6:39 a.m. Saturday, covers most provinces north of the major rivers. It does not apply to Zeeland, Noord-Brabant, Limburg, and the Wadden Islands. According to KNMI, both conditions are expected to spread from the north toward the south as the morning progresses.

“In dense fog, visibility is less than 200 meters, and the fog can occur suddenly. Both the fog and the slipperiness can last well into the morning,” KNMI said.

The weather institute said the hazardous conditions are caused by the freezing of wet road sections as well as freezing fog, increasing the risk for motorists during the morning commute.
