D66 nominates Rianne Letschert as informateur to lead next phase of cabinet formation

D66 announced Tuesday it will nominate Rianne Letschert as informateur to guide the next phase of the Dutch cabinet formation, following Sybrand Buma’s recent tenure. Letschert, chair of Maastricht University’s board, could begin later this week if the Tweede Kamer approves. She is from Stiphout in Helmond, Noord-Brabant, Omroep Brabant reminds.

D66 leader Rob Jetten will formally submit a motion Wednesday. Letschert succeeds Buma, who presented his final report Monday and will return as mayor of Leeuwarden.

Letschert, a professor of victimology and international law, has led multiple scientific institutions and was named “Top Woman of the Year” in 2019. Since 2023, she has chaired the advisory body for the Nationaal Groeifonds, advising the government on investment proposals.

D66, VVD, and CDA lack a Tweede Kamer majority, requiring negotiations issue by issue. VVD has ruled out joining a cabinet with GroenLinks-PvdA, favoring a center-right government, while other parties such as JA21 or GroenLinks-PvdA could provide selective support.
