Goat born with crooked legs saved by rare orthopedic surgery in Noord-Holland

A week-old goat named Bennie, born with severely crooked front legs, has been given a chance at a normal life after a rare and complex orthopedic surgery, Farm of Mercy, an animal rescue organization, reported.

Bennie arrived at Farm of Mercy in Noord-Holland when he was just one week old. Due to his condition, he could only move by crawling, and initial attempts with physical therapy and splints proved ineffective. Euthanasia was briefly considered.

Instead, veterinarians opted for a “rare and complex” procedure. During the surgery, Bennie’s joints were removed, and his front legs were straightened and secured with plates and screws. Ten days after the operation, he returned to Farm of Mercy with two fully straight front legs.

“Bennie was lively from the start, despite his handicap,” Farm of Mercy caretakers said. “We felt he deserved a fair chance, and thanks to the dedication of all specialists involved, that has been achieved.”
