Police arrest individual over death threats against author Lale Gül

Police arrested an individual on Thursday morning for allegedly making death threats against writer and columnist Lale Gül, according to Gül. The Central Netherlands police have declined to comment on the matter.

The 28-year-old Dutch-Turkish author gained recognition in 2021 with her autobiographical novel “Ik ga Leven,” which explores the pressure of growing up in a strict Islamic family. Since its publication, she has been the target of online threats. In August, three individuals were arrested for allegedly making threats against her.

ANP has obtained an email from the police replying to Gül’s inquiries about the arrest, though it contained no additional information.

Gül says that she files weekly reports of online death threats aimed at her. In August, three individuals were arrested in connection with threats against the writer. Last week, she expressed serious concerns about her safety after being informed that her security protection would soon be discontinued by the NCTV (National Coordinator for Counterterrorism and Security).

Gül described feeling “in full panic” after learning her security protection would be withdrawn. She worries it leaves her more exposed, particularly in light of the recent arrest related to a death threat.

The author said on the TV show RTL Tonight that she plans to officially contest the decision by writing to the Caretaker Minister for Justice and Security, Foort van Oosten. She added her hope that her employers, RTL, Talpa, and De Telegraaf, will submit similar levels of support.
