Zeeland parties unite after Syrian family targeted at asylum center

Political parties in Zeeland have joined forces to condemn threats and intimidation at asylum seeker centers after reports that a Christian family from Syria was targeted at the asylum center in Goes. Similar concerns have been reported at other centers across the province, according to Lizo Koppejan, a provincial council member from the ChristenUnie.

“Everyone residing in Zeeland must be able to live in freedom and safety, without being threatened because of their faith or beliefs. Whoever you are, whatever your orientation, and wherever you come from,” Koppejan said. All political parties in the province publicly supported his statement.

Zeeland’s King’s Commissioner, Hugo de Jonge, said the provincial executive “shares these views.” He stressed that the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) is responsible for maintaining safety inside the centers. “And if things really get out of hand, the mayor and local security triangle will step in,” De Jonge added.

The collective response underscores growing concern about the safety of asylum seekers in Zeeland and a unified political stance against intimidation based on religion, beliefs, or personal background.
