Go Ahead Eagles fall 2-0 to Red Bull Salzburg in UEFA Europa League clash
Go Ahead Eagles were beaten 2-0 in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday by Red Bull Salzburg. Go Ahead were in the game until the last hour but succumbed to two goals from the home side in the last stages of the game.
It leaves Go Ahead with a record of two wins and two losses in their first four Europa League games, a record that manager Melvin Boel will be pleased with, considering the modest resources that the club has.
It was an uneventful first half with very few chances. It was clear that the home side had a slight edge on Go Ahead, but neither side was able to dominate and show much quality.
The first goal came just before the hour mark. A low cross from Aleksa Terzic was met by former PSV striker Yorbe Vertessen at the near post. The Belgian used the inside of his foot to guide the ball past Jari de Busser.
Salzburg were comfortable from this moment on. De Busser was forced into more saves, the next coming from Sōta Kitano. The Japanese midfielder’s touch was perfect, setting up the shot which De Busser was able to parry with relative ease.
Terzic added to his assist with a beautiful goal in the 80th minute to finish the game off. The left back came forward and then drilled a shot hard into the far top corner. A goal worthy of winning any game, and it definitely won this one, with Go Ahead unable to create anything of note throughout.
It was Salzburg’s first win in the competition this season. They face Bologna away on the 27th of November. Go Ahead will host German side VFB Stuttgart.
