Half of FvD voters oppose ban on parties that undermine the rule of law

Half of the FvD voters are against a ban on Dutch political parties that undermine the rule of law, a survey conducted by Kieskompas and the ANP shows. The survey was filled in by over 13,000 people.

Over a third of SGP supporters think that parties that undermine democracy should not be prohibited, while 25% of PVV voters oppose such a ban. In total, over 8,800 people surveyed think that parties that undermine the rule of law should be banned. Almost 1,900 people disagree with a ban of this type.

Opposition to banning parties that undermine the rule of law is strongest among 18- to 34-year-olds, with more than 18 percent against such a measure. Older voters tend to support a ban, with nearly 75 percent of those aged 65 and over in favor. Men are more likely than women to oppose a ban, while support among men and women is roughly equal.

The survey was conducted between September 26 and 30 by Kieskompas and was completed by a representative group of 13,159 adult Dutch citizens. They were asked whether they agreed with the statement: “Parties that undermine the democratic rule of law should be banned.”

Banning a political party is legally complicated. In the Netherlands, such a ban could only be enforced by a court under Article 1 of the Electoral Act and Article 131 of the Criminal Code. It is a significant measure that is seldom used.
