Amsterdam’s Royal Theatre Tuschinski named a European film treasure

Amsterdam’s Royal Theatre Tuschinski has been added to the Treasures of European Film Culture by the European Film Academy (EFA), the academy announced on October 9, 2025.

The designation recognizes Tuschinski as a site of historical and symbolic value for European cinema, deserving preservation for future generations. The Netherlands now has two locations on the list, alongside Rotterdam’s Koningshaven Bridge.

Tuschinski heatre was commissioned in 1921 by Abraham Icek Tuschinski with his brothers-in-law. A former clothing maker from Poland, Tuschinski had initially planned to move to the United States in 1904 but stayed in Rotterdam, where he opened several cinemas.

Known for its striking Art Deco interior and exterior, Tuschinski was acquired by Pathé in 1995. In 2021, Time Out magazine named it the most beautiful cinema in the world.
