PostNL starts delivering some packages to U.S. again

Dutch postal carrier PostNL will once again ship a large portion of packages destined for the United States starting on Friday, but for the time being the service restart will primarily apply to personal gifts. Last month, the mail and parcel company temporarily halted this service due to uncertainty surrounding a change in law and policy in that country.

Until recently, packages up to 800 U.S. dollars in value were exempt from import duties in the US, but the second administration of President Donald Trump ended that. Many postal companies around the world were subsequently left with uncertainty about how to comply with all customs requirements.

This led to an 80 percent drop in mail traffic to the US, according to the UN Universal Postal Union.

PostNL announced earlier this month that a solution was in sight. The company can now handle all business and return shipments to the US again.

Individuals can only send shipments marked as gifts to the country duty free up to a value of 100 dollars. This only applies to packages sent for non-commercial purposes.

There is not yet a solution for more expensive packages.
